South Bend Community Excluded from Hiring of Police Review Board Director

MAARPR members Julian Dean, Ricky Herbst, and Gerrie Casey published an article in the South Bend Tribune detailing how the South Bend community was excluded from the process of hiring a director for the new Community Police Review Board. While the recent establishing of a Review Board was a major win for holding police accountable for misconduct, the lack of transparency in the hiring process for director continues a pattern of disregarding community concerns.

“When we are in pain, we often abhor the pain of others. In a city with so much hurt, the creation of our CPRB had been an opportunity to help heal some of the pain festering in South Bend since long before Eric Logan was shot and killed by police two years ago. It was an opportunity to examine all forms of police misconduct and open two-way lines of communication between police and those they serve. Jones’ hiring actions actively stopped that healing process and grievously endangered the CPRB’s success.”
